What better way to explore west Cornwall’s rich variety of cultural offerings than by visiting one of the many art exhibitions on offer this summer?
Famed for its world-renowned art scene as much as it is for its striking natural landscapes, the area is awash with events that celebrate the eclectic mix of artistic talent and heritage that affords fascinating insight into a place that continues to inspire so many.
Penlee House Gallery & Museum in Penzance is hosting Stanhope Forbes (10th June-9th September) – one of the Newlyn School of Art’s most prominent figures, during this collation of over 70 works, one of which will be displayed for the first time in more than 70 years.
Prepare to be dazzled by ‘A Certain Kind of Light’ (27 May-23 September), an exploration of a range of artists’ musings on light at The Exchange in Penzance, which will be lit up courtesy of illuminated artwork, Lightwave, on the gallery’s façade.
Peruse paintings, photography, installations and sculpture from the 1960s to today from Roger Ackling, David Batchelor, Angela Bulloch, Garry Fabian Miller, Ceal Floyer, Peter Freeman, Raphael Hefti, Anish Kapoor, Peter Lanyon, Rut Blees Luxemburg, Julian Opie, John Riddy, Mark Titchner, Paul Winstanley, and Toby Ziegler.
Head to Newlyn Art Gallery for ‘Craftschool’ (22nd July-16th September): an exhibition and workshop space focused on the art of creating and making, with visitors invited to dabble in crafts including spoon-carving and weaving on cardboard looms.
And for an alfresco artistic experience that summons all the senses, visit Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens on Friday 25th August for Skyspace at Dusk – the chance to view James Turrell’s innovative Tewlwolow Kernow during dusk’s “hypnotic transition.”
