Cape Cornwall, or 'Pen Kernow' in Cornish, is one of only two such capes in the UK, the other being Cape Wrath in Scotland. It’s also one of the best locations to holiday in, and we have fantastic ,a href="http://www.westcornwallcottageholidays.com/"> Cornwall Holiday Cottages for you to stay in.

Once thought to be the most south-westerly point in England-after modern surveying techniques, Land's End was discovered to be the most westerly - the Cape is the point at which the Atlantic currents split, either going south up the English Channel, or north into the Bristol Channel and Irish Sea. The area is absolutely gorgeous, and we have the best cottages in Cape Cornwall for you to see the coastline for yourself on your break! Cape Cornwall golf is some of the best in the area, and our self catered cottages are conveniently located near the green. No matter what you want to do, we’ll have the holiday cottages in Cornwall that’s right for you!

Cape Cornwall has a fascinating and famous history as in the early 20th century, Cape Cornwall was owned by Captain Francis Oates, who began his working life underground at the age of 12 in the local Balleswidden Mine. A mine captain by the time he was 23, he emigrated to South Africa to seek his fortune. After only three years as a Mining Engineer with the De Beers Diamond Company, he was invited onto the board of directors eventually taking over as chairman of De Beers from Cecil Rhodes.

During the early 1900s he returned to his beloved west Cornwall, where he built Porthledden House, the magnificent 21 bedroom mansion that currently stands like a sentinel guarding the Cape. He died in South Africa, stranded by the First World War and a memorial to him can be found in the local church in St.Just. The Cape is in fact now owned by food giant Heinz and has been given to the National Trust in perpetuity. It still plays a major part in local life, especially Priests Cove to the left hand side of the Cape with its small fishing community and home to the annual swim from the cove to the Brisons Rocks, approximately one mile from the shoreline. At low tide in the cove, one can still see the outline of the miners sea bath, a chilly reminder of the days when workers would emerge from the local mine and wash in the sea, in all weathers, before going home.
